THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM
From fall 2011 to summer 2015, artists from across the U.S. and Canada lived as Artists-in-Residence at Shared Space Studio.
With up to five artists at a time, they lived communally, making new work inspired by the environment and fostered by the facility. Residents were expected to engage the local community, offer fresh ideas through a series of free and open slide talks, and take as many beach trips as possible.
In the summer of 2016, twenty-eight of the past thirty-four resident artists participated in a group exhibition at The Fed Galleries in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The exhibition gathered the group as a collective and served as a document of the collaborative efforts of the visiting artist program. In the weeks after the exhibition residency facilitators Eliza Fernand and Mary Rothlisberger created a catalog of the project as a whole. The Land of Here and Now includes weekly recaps of five seasons of resident artists, essays by locals and participants, and photography of the play, the process, and the final exhibition.
